A fundamental part of my teaching is voice technique training to develop vocal freedom. But what does that mean?

Muscle Tension

Unecessary muscle tension can limit the available tonal colours, range, and sustainability of a singer’s voice. When I help relieve unnecessary tension, the result is that your voice will sound less forced, singing will be easier, and you will feel less fatigued after singing.

Having appropriate alignment and breath support is key to this. Very little lasting progress can be made in relieving your tension if these are not efficient.

Breathing

Optimal breathing for singing involves releasing your abdominal muscles on the inhale, and coordinating engagement of certain abdominal muscles on the exhale/vocalization.

Abdominal muscles have an inherent, hard wired link to managing breath flow and pressure for particular vocal tasks. For example, if you are laughing or shouting, you will be using your abdominal muscles. We can train your abdominal muscles to work similarly, but in a way that is appropriate for whatever you are singing.

Alignment

Alignment is essentially the way you stand, and breath support will allow abdominal muscles to manage breath flow and breath pressure.

Singing is a highly intricate muscular process, so we need to make sure we don’t make it harder by using more muscles than we need to.

The principle of alignment is that we want the most amount of movement available to us with the least amount of muscular engagement. The key here is having balanced alignment. This is neither standing up ‘straight’ (implying rigidity) and being collapsed or slumped.

You may find it alien, but also hopefully easier and freer. We will work together towards habitual alignment, and get to the point where you don’t have to think about it.
